Bit About the Derby Shoe
The way these lace indicate they are a derby: the open lacing system. Conversely we have the oxford (the closed laces). Although not clear, the general idea is that the derby came about due to the Earl of Derby needing a pair of shoes he could get his large feet into. Before this boots were worn with buttons or with closed lacing which were difficult to get on and off. Instead of that, the bookmaker, decided to have flaps inserted with the laces attached to those and this helped the Earl immensely! The Derby became a classic shoe over time, originally being more a house shoe and is now acceptable as work wear.
